We are so lucky to be living in an age, where as Mums, we have a choice. We can choose to stay home with our kids. We can choose to go back to work. We can choose to work from home.
With so many amazing platforms and business models now available, the ways in which you can create an income for your family while staying at home with your children is limited only by your motivation.
Here are 5 ideas you could start your Work at Home Mum journey with today!
Become a Virtual Assistant
If you have a background in administration or you’re pretty savvy with organising other poeple, then being a virtual assistant could be for you.
These days, virtual assistants look after a host of responsibilities, from website creation and maintenance through to social media management, content creation, scheduling, event management, inbox management – basically the sky is the limit. And they get paid pretty well too.
I have quite a few friends who make a decent salary from working as a VA from home while raising their kids.
One of the best things about becoming a VA is that there are fairly minimal set up costs. But you will need
a good level of administrative and online experience to get your business of the ground.
Set up a Blog
Blogging is as popular as ever today.
In fact, there are so many ways that you can earn money from writing a blog – but be warned that it’s not an overnight money making endeavour. It can take years to create an income from blogging, but if you’re good at what you do, the sky is the limit.
Once you have an engaged audience, you can create income streams from affiliate links, sponsored posts, advertising space and loads more! The sky really is the limit with this one.
Be warned, it’s not an endeavour that you’re likely to gain overnight success from, but like anything, if you’re willing to put in the time and effort then you could create an income from doing something you love over time.
Create a Product Based Business and Sell Online
The great thing about selling online is that you can capture a bigger audience. As Mums, we often need to work at night or during our children’s day time naps. Selling online means that we can work when it suits us, rather than having to go to a 9 to 5 job.
One of the biggest reasons I created an online business was that I needed something to fit in with our FIFO lifestyle and a 9 to 5 job just couldn’t do that.
There are a million possibilities with this one – it could be an original product you’ve designed and had created, an online or digital product, drop shipping someone else’s product, a shop with a range of products in a particular niche.
Become a Consultant
If you enjoyed a professional career prior to having children, why not use your experience to consult in your area of expertise. There are so many different ways you could create this business to work for you.
You could choose to only consult when your partner is home to look after the children, consult online at night, while the kids are at school – you can make it work for you and your situation.
There are lots of Mums making a successful income from consulting in their area of expertise – whether it be education, insurance, marketing, design, business … the sky is the limit!
This is a great way to build on your pre-kids career and use your education and experience to forge a profitable niche for yourself while raising your kids.
With so many communication platforms available, consulting has become a global business, limited only by your imagination.
Join a Multi Level Marketing Business
With a new one seemingly popping up every week, the choices are endless and all the “hard work” backend business stuff is done for you.
I know several amazing Mums who have created a profitable, successful business from MLM – but their success has not come from doing nothing. They have worked incredibly hard to forge their niche and enjoy success.
But a word of warning – the statistics aren’t stacked in your favour. The ability to actually make money from the schemes can be tough and often, you end up spending all your “earnings” on more products. So tread carefully, but don’t discount it altogether.
And if you do go down this path – please don’t be a spammer. If you don’t know someone personally, please don’t send them a random Facebook message or spam the groups you’re a member of with your business proposal. It’s the number one reason most people don’t like MLM business models!
Have realistic Work from Home Expectations
While being able to work from home is great, make sure you are realistic about it.
It’s not easy, especially when your children are young and still need you every minute of every day.
Your business will not always be an overnight success for many reasons (cudos to you if it is though) – it will be something you have to work hard on to achieve success – but it will be so much sweeter when you do.
Many people think that Work at Home mums spend their days with their feet up typing away on their laptops, but the reality can be very, very different.
